THE WALL STREET JOURNAL featured an opinion by former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education Williamson M. Evers titled “California Leftists Try to Cancel Math Class” (5/19/2021). It’s both an illuminating and sobering look into California’s educational system.

Mr. Evers noted that California’s Instructional Quality Commission is in the process of reviewing a new math curriculum. The new curriculum repeatedly recommends that teachers use “A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction: Dismantling Racism in Mathematics Instruction” as an instructional manual. The manual includes this course description;
“The framework for deconstructing racism in mathematics offers essential characteristics of anti racist math educators and critical approaches to dismantling white supremacy in math classrooms by making visible the toxic characteristics of white supremacy culture with respect to math.”

The manual then encourages teachers to;
- “Identify and challenge the ways that math is used to uphold capitalist, imperialist, and racist views.”
- “Expose students to examples of people who have used math as resistance.”
- “Provide learning opportunities that use math as resistance.”
Injecting critical race theory into the mathematics curriculum will be devastating to students in California’s public schools.
